Now that parking is illegal along Monongahela Boulevard between Patteson Drive and the PRT overpass is prohibited, West Virginia University is working with state and local law enforcement and highway officials to limit the impact on area neighborhoods and to develop long- and short-term alternatives, especially for athletic and special events.

The University will keep students and others informed about those discussions.

In the meantime, WVU students and visitors who park in those areas will need to find other locations. Morgantown Police have been issuing warning tickets since the “no parking” signs were erected earlier this week, and plan to begin ticketing and towing on Monday.

WVU Director of Transportation and Parking Hugh Kierig noted there are many options available:

  • The WVU Coliseum parking lot currently has a morning average of approximately 130 empty spaces, primarily in areas around the tennis courts and Shell building.
  • Underused Short-term Parking on the Evansdale campus, including the Short-term 8 lot at the Erickson Alumni Center and Short-term 9 lot on Fine Arts Drive across from the Creative Arts Center. The parking rate is $1 per hour in those lots.
  • Mountaineer Station, on Van Voorhis Road, has about 150 spaces available on average. The parking rate is $1 per hour and has direct connection to the PRT or Mountain Line bus.
  • Consider using alternative transportation, such as:
    • The PRT, which is free for students and employees and links all campuses.
    • Mountain Line buses, which are free to students and WVU employees with WVU ID. More information on Mountain Line services is available at http://www.busride.org/
    • Morgantown Parking Authority garages and lots close to the Downtown campus. Information on MPA parking at http://www.parkmpa.com/
    • Walking or riding bicycles.
    • For those who live in major apartment complexes, using the available shuttle services.

The signs were installed by the West Virginia Department of Highways on the northbound lane from the PRT Bridge to the intersection of Mon Boulevard and Patteson Drive. On the southbound lane, parking is prohibited from the intersection of Mon and Patteson to Eighth Street.
