Opening up West Virginia University’s Blue and Gold Mine Sale for community donations this year made way for one of the larger sales in the event’s history.

The seventh annual sale, held on May 21, brought in $12,000 for the United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties.

Fifty-four tons of donations to the sale came from drop-off locations all over town, including Mountaineer Station, the Student Recreation Center, Chateau Royale, and each WVU residence hall.

Donations from students and community members included unwanted furnishings, clothing, televisions, computers, bedding, lamps, seasonal home dcor and kitchenware. The donations were then sold at the Milan Puskar Stadium to benefit the University’s United Way Campaign.

Stephanie Utt, operations coordinator at WVU Facilities Management, said she was pleased with the end product, and thanked the WVU community, the United Way and the City of Morgantown for their significant contributions to the sale.

“The Blue and Gold Mine Sale was an excellent opportunity for students and community members to donate their unwanted items,” Utt said. “The sale improves our environment by diverting literally tons of waste from our local landfill and benefits the lives of our fellow community members by donating all of the proceeds to the United Way.”

Every spring since 2005, WVU, the City of Morgantown, and the United Way have worked together to make this event possible. Each year, approximately 50 tons of material is donated.

“We are thrilled with the results of the sale,” said Brett White, WVU United Way Campaign Director. “This money will go directly to our campaign that supports 31 local non-profits in their important community efforts.”

“West Virginia University believes in the mission of our local United Way and this sale is another opportunity for us to raise funds for the important cause.”
