John A. Bolt has been named interim director of News and Information Services at West Virginia University.

Bolt, who has been assistant director since September, replaces Dan Kim, who accepted a position at his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

Prior to joining WVU, Bolt spent 22 years working as an editor and manager for the Associated Press, most recently as the West Virginia state bureau chief.

A graduate of Clemson University, he worked in AP bureaus in Atlanta and Dallas before moving to Charleston in 1997. There, he was responsible for overseeing all news coverage, supervising a staff of 11 reporters and managing a budget of more than $1 million. During his time in the state capital, he raised the national profile and reputation of the bureau, resulting in increased coverage for West Virginia. He also worked at newspapers in his native South Carolina.

“We’re thrilled to have John on board to help tell the WVU story via multiple platforms to our varied audiences,” said Assistant Vice President for Communications Becky Lofstead. “He’s a talented multi-skilled journalist who enjoys working as a team in an environment that encourages learning, creativity and strategic thinking.”

Bolt is married to Margaret Bolt and they have two grown children, both of whom have degrees from WVU: Greg received a Master of Science in Physical Education in 2001 and Julia a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies in 2006.

Bolt will oversee a staff of eight and work as part of an integrated marketing and communication team under the University Relations umbrella. He will begin his new duties immediately.
