West Virginia University will hold its tenth annual Relay for Life fundraiser on Friday, April 24, at 6 p.m. at the WVU Shell Building. The goal for this year is to raise $105,000. All proceeds benefit cancer research, education, patient services and advocacy programs.

Relay for Life, a signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, is a 12-hour overnight event in which teams take turns walking or running laps to raise money for cancer research and patients, as well as spread cancer awareness, celebrate the lives of survivors, remember those who lost their lives to cancer, and unite a community in the fight against cancer.

There are currently 83 teams and 1,159 participants registered for the event. Relay for Life is made up of many different teams, consisting of friends, student organizations, Greeks, alumni, community members, cancer survivors, and friends, family and neighbors of survivors and more.

“Relay for Life at WVU is such an important event,” said assistant director of WVU Office of Student Activities Kim Harrison. “It brings together the campus community in a way like no other event can. It’s a time to reflect on what has been lost, honor our survivors and pledge to find a cure. It’s a very powerful and moving time.”

“As a cancer survivor, I am always moved at the time and energy that so many students are willing to commit to make this one of the signature events at WVU. Their support is greatly appreciated,” said Harrison.

The night will include food, games, entertainment and activities for participants. The event ends at 6 a.m. on Saturday, April 25.

The event is free, and anyone from the community is welcome to participate. To create or join a team, or to make a donation, visit Relay for Life West Virginia University.

With the support of thousands of student volunteers across the U.S., the American Cancer Society is helping save more than 400 lives a day.
