Volunteers are being sought to “Party in the Dark” for a good cause.

West Virginia University’s WVUp All Night Program is partnering with New Vision Renewable Energy for an event in which volunteers will assemble solar-powered lights and batteries for cyclone victims on the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu.

Located in Philippi, West Virginia, New Vision Renewable Energy is a non-profit organization that works locally and globally to provide renewable energy products to communities in need.

The event will be held April 9-12 in the Mountaineer room of Mountainlair beginning at 10 p.m. and is limited to 50 participants. Students can register for the event April 8-10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Mountainlair. They can register the night of the event starting at 9 p.m. if space is still available.

“Party In The Dark” is an initiative that has been created by New Vision to raise awareness to the 1.3 billion people still living in global energy poverty and those affected by darkness after a disaster strikes.

“Hands on events such as Party in the Dark are a critically-important part of the educational experience for WVU students,” said Sonja Wilson, director of the WVUp All Night Program. “They broaden students’ understanding of issues that might not seem relevant to them at the time and expose them to non-academic entities that are on the front lines of trying to make a difference in the world – a rather large and sometimes daunting undertaking.”
