West Virginia University was informed Wednesday night (Nov. 19) that Beta Theta Pi fraternity’s national office revoked that organization’s charter based on past behavior issues. Office of Student Activities officials followed up today (Nov. 20) with a letter in support of the national decision, confirming that the chapter has lost all rights and privileges and is no longer a recognized campus group.

In addition, Morgantown Police are continuing their investigation into a Nov. 12 emergency medical situation where personnel were called to an off-campus fraternity, Kappa Sigma. WVU student Nolan Burch died two days later. Morgantown Police also continue to investigate a disturbance by Sigma Chi fraternity members in the South Park neighborhood of Morgantown.

Meanwhile, the University and its InterFraternity and Panhellenic councils will continue a moratorium on all social and new member activities for the immediate future. WVU’s fraternity and sorority councils, along with the Office of Student Activities, are planning to bring a national facilitator to campus following the Thanksgiving break to assist students in thoughtful discussions and development of solutions.
