High-achieving Monongalia County third through sixth graders can explore architecture, the minds of favorite literary heroes and villains, multimedia technology and debate at the second annual West Virginia University Summer Gifted and Talented Workshops June 18-22.

Hosted by WVU’s College of Human Resources and Education under the direction of Dr. Jill Olthouse, the workshops will occur daily and are taught by certified gifted and talented teachers, all of whom are enrolled in the WVU special education master’s program.

“WVU Summer TAG Workshops are unique because they are academic oriented but still fun and engaging,” said Olthouse, WVU assistant professor in special education. “The workshops feel like summer camp while learning at the same time.”

The course content combines critical and creative thinking skills with advanced, above-grade level content knowledge in math, science, literacy and technology. The courses offered are:

• Bridge Building (interdisciplinary science)
• Villain or Hero? (creative writing)
• Journalism 2.0 (academic writing)
• The Great Debate (persuasive writing)

To see the requirements for each course, for more information or to apply, visit http://slate.wvu.edu/r/download/129218 or email jill.olthouse@mail.wvu.edu.

Discounts worth $25 are available to participants who enroll in two writing courses and agree to complete an interview as part of writing research conducted by the WVU Department of Special Education.

The program also offers two $45 scholarships to participants who qualify for free and reduced lunch. Qualified students must apply for these and two winners will be selected from the pool of applicants.

While WVU Summer TAG Workshops is the only gifted and talented summer program in Monongalia County, participants are not required to be enrolled in gifted and talented during the school year. Instead, students will be evaluated based on the above pre-requisites.
