Myra N. Lowe, associate dean of libraries, will be appointed interim dean of libraries at West Virginia University, succeeding Frances O’Brien, who is retiring. Lowe’s appointment will be effective Jan. 1, 2012.

“Myra has given exemplary service to the University Libraries in a variety of roles, including most recently directing the Libraries’ initiatives for new services in response to user needs,” said WVU Provost Michele Wheatly. “Her thoughtful leadership and her depth of knowledge have earned her the utmost respect from the entire library staff. Myra brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to this critical position. I am grateful for her willingness to serve.”

Dean Lowe received a master’s degree in library science from the University of Michigan and a master’s of business administration from WVU. She has served as associate dean and director of the Downtown Campus Library since 2000. In that role her responsibilities have included providing oversight of the Research, Acquisitions, Access Services and Media, Cataloging, Periodicals and Library Systems departments. In addition she has assisted with strategic planning, management of library human resources and administration of the library’s budget. Lowe served as interim dean in 1998-1999, and was head of the Reference Department for more than a decade.

O’Brien is retiring after a 38-year career in academic libraries. Her service to WVU began in 1999. She is entering the University’s phased retirement program for two years beginning in January 2012, with assignments within the Libraries and the Office of the Provost.

Wheatly will begin the search process for a dean of libraries in late 2012. Lowe’s appointment will run until a new dean is selected and appointed.
