The heart of innovation, research and service thumps hard at West Virginia University.

President James P. Clements can tell you all about it. In fact, he recently told this to an audience of more than 200 Mountaineers at his annual State of the University address.

Epitomizing this Mountaineer spirit is political science sophomore Katherine Bomkamp, who, at age 16, invented a prosthetic device designed to eliminate pain in amputees.

Clements applauded Bomkamp’s drive, passion and creativity. But she’s not the only Mountaineer out to change the world.

With the help of extraordinary Mountaineers like Bomkamp, WVU is redefining itself as a 21st century land-grant university.

Innovation is growing. Research is growing. Service is growing.

This is the story of our future—the future of WVU.
