The KY-WV Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Research Symposium will promote research among minority students in its fifth annual event to be held Oct. 6-7 at West Virginia University.

The Alliance for Minority Participation is a National Science Foundation-funded program that works to advance minorities in science, technology, engineering and math fields. The program works to provide community, academic and research resources to recruit, retain and graduate students in undergraduate programs as well as encourage them to go on to graduate studies.

“Hosting this event on our campus is yet another example of WVU’s commitment to pursue excellence through diversity,” said Jennifer McIntosh, executive officer of the President’s Office for Social Justice. “It also reflects the strength of a partnership that extends across state lines and institutions with varying missions.”

The symposium will be held on West Virginia University’s main campus and at The Waterfront Place Hotel. WVU President Jim Clements and Kentucky State University President Mary Sias will address the group as well as KY-WV LSAMP Executive Director Michael Lee and WVU’s Executive Officer for Social Justice Jennifer McIntosh, among others.

During the event, students can participate in workshops on resume writing, engineering, math and the Mountaineer Adventure Program. Fun activities such as a barbecue and performance of the WVU African Dance Ensemble are also included.

KY-WV LSAMP is made of 10 universities in West Virginia and Kentucky that provide transitional bridge programs, undergraduate research opportunities, the annual research symposium and workshops that prepare students for research careers, graduate education and serve minority faculty in science, technology, engineering and math.
