In its second year, West Virginia University’s official student pregame tailgating event, the Student LOT, will feature a Battle of the Bands competition as the main attraction.

The Student LOT, located on Oakland Street across from the Ronald McDonald House near Milan Puskar Stadium, is free and helps promote a positive environment prior to football games for students.

Student Organizations Services and other Student Affairs units have worked together to organize another fun and exciting Student LOT,” said Ron Justice, director of Student Organizations Services. “We had a great turnout last year, and we are excited to offer our students a fun place to hang out before the Mountaineer home games.”

Each group competing in the Battle of the Bands, which is sponsored by West Run Apartments, includes at least one WVU student. The competition will be judged by select students, faculty and staff. There will be separate first-round battles between three different bands in each of the first three home games. Then, a Battle of the Bands final will take place. Sunday’s event will feature the following bands: “Square the Circle,” “The State” and “Black Action Cop.”

Following the completion of the Battle of the Bands competition, on Nov. 5 – the last Student LOT – the Davisson Brothers will perform.

There will not be a Student LOT for WVU’s game against Pittsburgh on Nov. 25.

As was the case last year, different University organizations sponsor the event each home football weekend. In addition, free food and non-alcoholic beverages provided by WVU’s Culinary Creations Catering will be available until 30 minutes prior to kickoff.

“Thousands of students visited the LOT last year, and we look forward to continuing to provide them with a fun and safe place to hang out with friends this football season,” said Vice President for Student Affairs Ken Gray. “As we kick off this season against Marshall on Sunday, all students are invited to stop by the LOT before the game and enjoy free food, entertainment and great giveaways.”

At the Mountaineers’ game on Sunday (Sept. 4) against Marshall University, the Student LOT will be sponsored by WVU Housing and Residential Education. The event will start at 12:30 p.m. and close at 3 p.m. to get ready for the 3:30 p.m. kickoff between WVU and the Thundering Herd.

The first 250 students at the Student LOT will receive free WVU t-shirts on Sunday. The event is sponsored by Centra Bank and The Ridge.

The Student LOT dates, times and sponsors are as follows:

  • Sunday, Sept. 4 (vs. Marshall), 12:30-3 p.m., WVU Housing and Residential Education
