Stepping stems from the ways in which African tribes communicated with one another, and is now used as a tool of expression and a way to increase diversity education through a series of unique performances.
Stepping was introduced into the practices and traditions of the organizations that make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council Inc. in the mid-to-late1920s. Since then, stepping has developed into a massive production that is held during the spring semester on college campuses throughout the nation.
Step shows are a creative and inimitable style of inventive entertainment; infused with skits of a particular theme that combine art, singing and dancing.
“This show is guaranteed to provide everyone with a memorable time,” said Tiffany Ford, president of the WVU council.
The National Pan-Hellenic Council Inc. is made up of nine historically African-American sororities and fraternities, members of all WVU chapters are expected to compete in the event.
The nine organizations in the council are: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc. and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc.
