All interested men and women are invited to take on the West Virginia University climbing wall at WVU’s first-ever Top Rope Competition on Saturday, Nov. 14.

The competition will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at WVU’s Student Recreation Center.

Beginner to expert climbers are welcome. Prizes will be awarded to the top men’s and women’s competitors in two categories – beginner and advanced.

“Our wall staff puts a lot of effort into the competition by hauling holds up the wall, trying each move and using a great deal of creativity to make unique climbs. We will have 25-30 routes ranging from beginner to expert,” said Brett Hagerty, program coordinator for the WVU Outdoor Recreation Center and climbing wall.

Competitors will be allowed to climb as many routes as they want, their top five scores will count. Points will only count when a route is finished without falling.

Additional prizes, including a pair of climbing shoes, will be raffled away to all who enter.

The cost to compete is $20 and includes a t-shirt. To register visit the WVU Outdoor Recreation Center, located on the first floor of the Student Recreation Center, the front desk of the Student Recreation Center or mail in the form found online at

Spectators are welcome to attend the competition.
