West Virginia University students and employees seeking out adventure have the opportunity to explore three southwestern desert areas in Texas and New Mexico with the Outdoor Recreation Center during their winter break.

The winter break trip runs from Dec. 30 to Jan. 12 and includes visits to Big Bend, Guadalupe and Carlsbad Caverns National Parks. Some of the activities for participants include backcountry camping, backpacking, caving and day hikes. The trip is camping-based. Participants will stay in tents every night and cook their food on camp stoves. Showers may be available at select sites along the way. The activities are at a medium physical difficulty and beginner to intermediate skill level.

Brett Hagerty, ORC program coordinator, said the extended trips during winter and spring breaks provide an experience that is unforgettable.

“Two weeks of getting to know a group of new people while exploring and learning new skills allows participants to forget about their schoolwork or job and focus on the beautiful outdoor areas and exciting activities offered,” Hagerty said.

The total cost of the trip is $600 and includes instruction, camping fees, park entrance fees, backcountry fees, transportation, trip gear and most meals. Pocket money for eating out, road drinks and souvenirs is recommended.

The deadline to register for the trip is Nov. 11. To register, stop by the Student Recreation Center. The official packet with pre-trip meeting dates, the trip itinerary and more information can be found by visiting http://studentreccenter.wvu.edu/r/download/142476. The Outdoor Recreation Center program is focused on getting students, faculty and staff outside to explore new places, gain skills, meet new people and have fun. Skills and safety instruction are an integral part of every trip to decrease risk and provide a learning experience. Trips are offered to give participants a chance to experience a variety of outdoor activities while exploring beautiful environments.
