Mark Kellogg, associate professor of trombone, euphonium, and chamber music at the Eastman School of Music, will present a recital and master class at the West Virginia University College of Creative Arts on Thursday, Sept. 24. Both events are free and open to the public.
The recital will begin at 4 p.m. followed by the master class in the Bloch Learning and Performance Hall Room 200A.
The recital will also feature pianist Joseph Werner. The program will include: “Concerto for Alto Trombone and Orchestra” by Georg Christoph Wagenseil; “Four Songs from “Die schone Mullerin,” by Franz Schubert (arranged by Kellogg); “Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra” by Jeff Tyzik; “Fantaisie” by Sigismond Stojowski; and “Upstate Divertimento” by Ken Kreuzer.
Kellogg enjoys the dual appointment of principal trombone of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra as well as associate professor at the Eastman School of Music. Throughout his career, he has embraced a wide variety of performing roles from jazz soloist to chamber musician to orchestral performer.
Prior to his appointment in the Rochester Philharmonic, he performed as a member of the San Francisco Symphony, Syracuse Symphony and National Repertory Orchestra. He has been a frequent guest with the Eastman Wind Ensemble as a soloist on tours to Japan and Carnegie Hall.
Active as a jazz and chamber musician, Mr. Kellogg was a founding member of the brass and percussion ensemble, Rhythm and Brass where he toured the U.S. and Japan, and recording four CDs.
Werner enjoys a varied career as a soloist, collaborative artist, orchestral pianist, administrator, and educator. He has been the principal pianist for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra since 1975. He also serves as co-artistic director of Chamber Music Rochester. As a chamber musician, Werner appears frequently with a host of Eastman School of Music faculty performers and RPO colleagues. He was the accompanist for the celebrated American violinist, Carroll Glenn, for many years and a founding member of Trio Nova.
Werner is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees and the Performer’s Certificate. He is currently the co-chairman of the Piano Department of the Hochstein Music School in Rochester.
