You don’t get to choose your biological family but, starting Sunday at sorority formal recruitment, students can choose their West Virginia University family.

“Going Greek at WVU helps make campus seem smaller, it’s a tight-knit community,” said Ashley Staggers, student program advisor for Panhellenic and WVU sororities and fraternities.

Sorority formal recruitment begins on Sunday, Sept. 13 and ends on Saturday, Sept.19. Formal recruitment provides an opportunity for students on campus to learn more about the sororities.

“It is a chance for potential new members to meet the sisters of each chapter and to learn about every aspect of the individual chapters,” said Claire Barth, a senior public relations major from Charleston, and president of National Panhellenic Conference at WVU.

Each day has a different theme starting with casual house tours of each of the eight houses on Sunday. Monday and Tuesday are philanthropy days, where girls learn about the different social causes the sororities represent and what they do to support those organizations. Thursday is skit night and Friday is preference night, where the girls choose who will become their sisters for a lifetime.

“Formal recruitment is a great way to meet other girls in a student’s major and provides students with a fun organization to get involved with on such a large campus,” said Lauren Biafora, a senior public relations major, of Morgantown, and vice president of recruitment coordination.

Students interested in recruitment must be enrolled full time at the University. Freshman must have a cumulative 2.0 GPA from high school and sophomores must have a cumulative 2.25 GPA in college.

There will be an informational meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 8 p.m. in the Mountainlair ballrooms. Any student interested in going through formal recruitment can register at the meeting, or at the booth in the Mountainlair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. until Friday, Sept. 11.
