On Friday (Sept. 11), West Virginia University will honor and remember those who were lost on Sept. 11, 2001.
Continuing their tradition, members of the Student Government Association will light a West Virginia evergreen and the bronze plaque located near the Downtown Campus Library. They will stay lit throughout the day.
The tree and plaque, which reads “We remember: The spirit of those lost on Sept. 11, 2001, lives in each of us,” were presented by WVU student leaders on the one year anniversary of 9/11.
The SGA is also inviting students, faculty, staff and the community to post messages of hope and remembrance on its blog: http://sga.wvu.edu/blog2 .
“This year marks the eighth anniversary of the terrorists attacks on September 11th. For many of us, we were in middle school or high school and this event defined our role as citizens of America. Again this year, we will be vigilant in honoring those who perished and remembering those who survived. I encourage the campus community to join us by blogging notes of remembrance,” said Whitney Rae Peters, vice president of the Student Government Association.
WVU lost two alumni in the terror attacks: Chris Gray, a 1992 and 1994 graduate who was working as a broker for Cantor Fitzgerald, and Jim Samuel Jr., a 1993 graduate who was working as a commodities broker for Carr Futures. Both worked at the World Trade Center Towers. Scholarship funds were set up in their memory through the WVU Foundation.
