Call it spring cleaning on a community scale. Dozens of West Virginia University students, faculty and staff are preparing to fan out across the Morgantown area to give back. They’ll pull on work gloves and pick up garbage bags during the Campus-Community Clean Up on Saturday (April 11). It’s the kickoff event as the Center for Service and Learning launches its tenth annual Week of Engagement April 11 through April 19. This week coincides with the National Volunteer Week to bring the entire Mountaineer and Morgantown community together and work towards a brighter future.

The Campus-Community Clean Up unites the WVU campus with surrounding communities to work together making a cleaner city for all to enjoy. It also serves as the inaugural event for the incoming officers of WVU’s Student Government Association. Teams will be working in the downtown Morgantown area, Evansdale, South Hills and Wiles Hill neighborhoods. Additional clean up teams will also take part in the Cooper’s Rock Work Weekend on Sunday (April 12) starting at 1 p.m.

During the remainder of the week, the CS&L will work with a variety of partners such as SGA, WECAN and the United Way to promote a series of other service related events.

From Monday (April 13) through Friday April (17), the CS&L and various partners will host a full schedule of faculty development sessions, partner and engagement fairs, student forums, service projects and more, culminating in the fifth annual Engagement Awards Celebration Thursday (April 16), where nominees will be honored for their excellence in service and engagement.

Capping the week, on Saturday (April 18), The CS&L will partner with the Mon and Preston Rotary Clubs for the second annual Stop Hunger Now Meal Packing Event.

A full listing of events can be found at service.wvu.edu/woe.

As the Week of Engagement approaches, the Center for Service and Learning encourages all faculty, staff and students to register on iServe for all hours of engagement to be recorded and counted toward the Million Hour Match, a collaborative initiative between WVU, Volunteer WV and the Corporation for National and Community Service encouraging students to perform a million hours of volunteer service by 2018.
