The Monongalia County West Virginia University Extension Office is accepting registrations for the fall 2009 Master Gardener Class.

The ten-week series of courses begins Sept. 2 and runs through Nov. 18. The class meets every Wednesday night from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the WVU Extension Office in Westover’s WesMon Plaza.

The Master Gardener program aims to increase knowledge and understanding of horticultural topics. These topics include growing flowers, vegetables and fruit; lawn care; house plant care; plant disease; insect pest control and more.
WVU Extension faculty and specialists, other WVU professors and regional experts will teach individual sessions.

To receive the West Virginia Master Gardener Volunteer certification, the gardener must attend all training sessions, pass a final examination and volunteer 30 hours of approved horticultural service to the community.

Volunteer activities can include writing gardening articles; participating in a public park beautification project; answering gardening questions at a local farmer’s market; or making presentations to garden clubs, civic groups and the public.

“The Master Gardener Volunteer Program provides a wonderful opportunity for people to share their knowledge and enthusiasm for gardening with others in their neighborhoods, schools, parks and communities,” said Sheryl Bergen Jarvis, Mon County Master Gardeners’ volunteer coordinator.

Class size is limited. Individuals participating in the class must pay an enrollment fee of $125 to cover the cost of training materials, speakers and facilities. To apply, contact the Monongalia County WVU Extension Office at 304-291-7201. Applicants can also download the form at http://monongalia.ext.wvu.edu. Click on the Master Gardener’s link and then click on the registration packet. Applications must be received by Sept. 2.

Sponsored by the WVU Monongalia County Extension Office, the Monongalia County Master Gardener Program is a non-profit, volunteer-trained organization designed to meet the horticultural needs of West Virginia citizens. It is open to people of all ages, regardless of socio-economic level, race, color, sex, or handicap.
