Residence halls across the West Virginia University campus will soon become home to thousands of WVU students.
Friday (Aug. 21) is move-in day for an estimated 5,500 students living on campus for the 2009-10 school year.
“This time of year is always organized chaos at WVU, but it’s very exciting as the school year begins,” said Corey Farris, director of Housing and University Apartments. “We go to great measures to ensure the process is comfortable and easy for students and their families.”
Students can check-in from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. To help minimize the crowd, all students are designated a specific time frame to check-in. Students who attended New Student Orientation on or before June 10 are asked to check-in from 8-11:30 a.m. Those who attended New Student Orientation after June 10, are encouraged to check-in from 12:30-4:30 p.m.
“We are especially excited this year because the new residence hall, Honors Hall, is opening,” Farris said. “It is a great facility and we are happy to see the first group of students move in.”
Honors Hall is located in Sunnyside near the downtown campus.
Morgantown and University Police will be on hand to help direct traffic and give parking information. More than 150 returning WVU students, known as “hotshots,” will be volunteering to help students and their families carry belongings.
“The police and ‘hotshots’ will work together to get students and their families as close to their residence halls or University apartments as possible,” Farris said. ”’Hotshots’ will help them unload, and then they will be directed to park a couple blocks away.”
Students moving in to the downtown campus residence halls including Arnold, Boreman, Dadisman and Arnold halls have been mailed a two-hour parking voucher for the city’s parking garages.
Students in other residence halls can use their Mountaineer Parents Club parking permit to park in any other University lot.
“Lots of patience is always needed,” Farris said. “We will help to achieve that by providing soft drinks and water at the check-in points to keep everyone comfortable.”
Once moved in, students may take advantage of the free transportation offered to the Welcome Picnic on Friday, the Shopping Extravaganza on Saturday and the University Welcome on Sunday.
Move-in day and the other welcome events are all part of WVU’s Welcome Week activities. For more information, go to http://firstyear.experience.wvu.edu/welcome_week.
