Adell Crowe, a veteran journalist and current assistant director of student media at American University in Washington, D.C., has been named director of student media at West Virginia University, overseeing the University’s award-winning student newspaper and radio station.

The new position was created by Vice President of Student Life Bill Schafer as part of an initiative to enhance the operations and services of WVU’s student-run radio station and newspaper, WWVU-FM and The Daily Athenaeum, respectively. The appointment is effective March 21.

As director, Crowe will report to Corey Farris, associate vice president of student life, and will serve as the chief operational officer responsible for strategic planning, fiscal, logistical and legal operations for each student media outlet. She will work with Student Life and other university constituents to drive new, cutting-edge initiatives to help push student media forward in support of institutional objectives.

“It’s a great time to be at West Virginia University,” Farris said. “I’m looking forward to Adell’s arrival and the implementation of her vision for student media. Her experiences on other campuses and with great newspapers such as USA today will offer our students working insight into real world journalism.”

Crowe has served as the assistant director of student media at American since 2011. Previously, she was the School of Communications partnership coordinator where she established student internship opportunities with NBC, USA TODAY and The Washington Post, among other media outlets. She was formerly a reporter for Gannett News Service and The Tennessean in Nashville, and later at USA TODAY where she also worked as the standards and development editor.

She created and led USA TODAY’s in-house training program, USATU, and taught a number of classes including a multi-session staff-wide grammar program. In addition, she taught the basic news writing course at The George Washington University for nine years.

“I am very excited about joining a dynamic team of dedicated student journalists and professionals at the DA and U92,” Crowe said. “It is a very exciting time to be a journalist and I am thrilled to be joining a university where students are given the tools, the training and the responsibility to become the next generation of industry leaders.”

Active since 1982, WWVU-FM is a WVU student-operated alternative rock station that offers a variety of news and sports programming. Approximately 160 student volunteers run the station.

The Daily Athenaeum has been the voice of the Mountaineers for more than 126 years. It is published Monday through Friday and is the 11th largest circulation newspaper in West Virginia. This newspaper is staffed entirely by students with supervision from a set of six full-time staff employees.
