Stephanie D. Taylor, a two-time honors graduate of West Virginia University and its College of Law and a lawyer from a top international firm, has been named the University’s general counsel, effective Feb. 15.

“We are thrilled that Stephanie will be joining our team,” Rob Alsop, vice president for legal and governmental affairs and entrepreneurial engagement, said in announcing her appointment. “She is an excellent lawyer and has a proven track record of service and commitment to the University.”

Taylor comes to WVU from Jones Day’s Pittsburgh office. She was Order of Augusta and graduated summa cum laude from the Reed College of Media and was first in her class and Order of the Coif at the College of Law. Following law school, Taylor served as a judicial law clerk for Judge Robert B. King of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. She currently co-teaches the Supreme Court Clinic at the College of Law.

She will oversee nine attorneys and three staffers in the Office of Legal Affairs and General Counsel. The office provides in-house legal counsel for WVU’s main and divisional campus, the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center-Charleston Division; Cooperative Extension Offices in all 55 counties; the State Conference Center at Jackson’s Mill; and WVU branch offices across the state.

Taylor, a native of Clarksburg, is the daughter of Michael and Marianne Taylor of Summersville. She is married to Richard M. Weibley. They have one daughter. Both of Taylor’s parents and all three siblings are WVU graduates.

“I am excited to come back home to West Virginia University, and very much look forward to serving my alma mater,” Taylor said.

Gary G. Furbee II, who has served as interim general counsel since September, has been promoted to deputy general counsel and will remain a key part of the legal services team.

“We owe Gary a debt of gratitude for shepherding us through the interim time,” Alsop said. “His ability, good sense and knowledge of WVU have kept us moving in the right direction.”
