With winter storm Jonas bearing down on the state, bringing prediction of up to two feet or more of snow, West Virginia University will close at 6 a.m. Friday, including cancellation of all classes.
The University is scheduled to reopen at 6 a.m. Sunday (Jan. 24), with classes resuming as normal Monday. However, officials will continue to monitor weather conditions.
Some University operations, including the Student Recreation Center, WVU Libraries, residence halls, dining services, the Mountainlair, roads and grounds and other essential operations, will continue. The PRT is expected to begin operation at 6:30 a.m. Friday and continue through noon.
For those employees needed on campus, if weather conditions prevent them from getting to work or getting to work on time, they should notify their supervisor as soon as possible and prior to the start of the shift.
“To ensure the safety of our staff, we felt it necessary to take this measure,” said Narvel Weese, vice president of administration and finance. “However, we appreciate that several staff members will remain on campus to ensure the continued operations of the University and the well-being of our students. We encourage all to keep safety in mind and to use good judgment.”
Monongalia County public safety officials encourage people to get food and other necessities Thursday afternoon or Friday morning at latest.
While operations are scheduled to resume Sunday morning, and classes on Monday, students, faculty and staff should stay tuned to local broadcast stations, WVU Web sites (students.wvu.edu, www.wvu.edu, wvutoday.wvu.edu) and social media outlets (@WVUToday and @WestVirginiaU on Twitter and www.facebook.com/wvumountaineers on Facebook), for the latest information.
