The Mountaineer Maniacs and WVU Intramural Sports are rallying students for their support in raising funds for the Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Research Endowment at the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center.

As part of Mountaineer Week Challenge Games, the Mountaineer Maniacs and Intramural Sports are working collaboratively to host the Bob Huggins 3-on-3 basketball tournament. The championship game will be played at halftime Friday (Nov. 7) at the men’s basketball exhibition game against Glenville State. The check will be presented to Coach Huggins a few minutes prior to tipoff.

The cost to sign up for each team is $15. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Research Endowment Fund established by WVU men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins in memory of his mother who died in 2003 following a long battle with colon cancer.

“The tournament is a fun and wonderful way for the WVU community to come together to support the efforts of Coach Huggins in honoring his late mother, Norma Mae, and to support a tremendous cause,” said Alyssa Leonard, graduate assistant with the WVU Intramural Sports.
The sign-up deadline is 5:30 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 30); students can sign up online at IMleagues.com.

Tournament games will take place November 2-5 from 7:00 to11:00 p.m. at the Student Recreation Center. Each participant will receive a free tournament t-shirt and the members of the winning team will receive a private tour of the Basketball Practice Facility.

“This is a great opportunity for students to participate in a charitable event while raising awareness and money for a great cause,” said Jason Olen, executive director of the Mountaineer Maniacs.

In keeping with Coach Huggins’ wishes, the endowment fund supports clinical research, specifically providing access to cancer clinical trials for all West Virginians.
