A course focusing on human resources best practices will be offered through the West Virginia University Center for Executive Education this fall.

The 2015 Society of Human Resource Management Learning System course will be offered starting August 19 through the Center for Executive Education, which operates out of the WVU College of Business and Economics.

The 2015 SHRM Learning System is the latest, intensive training program for HR professionals to expand their knowledge, develop new skill sets and prepare for SHRM’s new competency-based certifications: Certified Professional and the SHRM Senior Certified Professional credentials. If already certified, participants can earn up to 36 professional development credits.

SHRM, the world’s largest association dedicated to HR management, announced in May 2014 that it was developing a new certification based on the SHRM Competency Model, which identifies eight behavioral competencies and one technical competency – HR Knowledge or HR Expertise – that HR professionals need to advance their careers and improve effectiveness in the workplace.

“There have been dramatics changes in the roles that HR professionals play over the past decade. These professionals are essential members of leadership teams for companies and organizations,” said Joyce Heames, B&E Associate Dean for Innovation, Outreach and Engagement. “Companies and businesses are complicated, so it is important for these professionals to gain new competencies such as business acumen, HR analytics, and corporate social responsibility, while improving their core competencies such as Talent Acquisition, Compensation/Benefits, and Training & Development. The new certification by SHRM allows HR professionals to stay current and relevant, thus providing a better service to their organizations.”

The upcoming fall program will meet every-other Wednesday afternoon from August 19 through November 18 from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. The classes will be held in the College of Business and Economics.

“The WVU College of Business and Economics is at the forefront of the education and practice of HR with our MSIR program, the Center for Executive Education’s partnership with SHRM and the courses the Center offers,” B&E Interim Dean Nancy McIntyre said. “Several MSIR and other faculty members will teach the modules and, with their knowledge and expertise, we are confident that participants will be prepared for the certification exams. These certifications will enhance their effectiveness in the workplace and help propel their careers.”

“The Society for Human Resource Management is delighted at the opportunity to partner with the WVU Center for Executive Education and to help HR professionals acquire both the competencies and knowledge essential for success in today’s global economy,” said J. Robert Carr, SPHR, SHRM Senior Vice President for Membership, Marketing and External Affairs. “We regard the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP as the new standard in certification for the HR profession.”
