The WVU Center for Service and Learning engaged the community through its annual community partner luncheon last week (July 8), uniting non-profit, campus and public leaders with the goal of serving West Virginia University and the greater Morgantown community.

More than 70 partners attended the luncheon to brainstorm service project ideas for the upcoming 2015-16 academic year. They worked with leaders from WVU’s Student Government Association to learn how they can work together to connect with students during service projects and lead culture change.

“It was a great opportunity for students to network with local community partners and come up with innovative, student-led service projects,” said George Capel, SGA president. “We believe that giving back to the community is essential to a culture change. Events like these are helping us achieve that goal.”

One of the main goals of the luncheon was to provide non-profit leaders with first-hand student interaction and feedback regarding the best practices in getting more students involved, helping promote their programs and how they can connect with campus organizations. These new projects will help the students and the Morgantown community in completing the Million Hour Match, an initiative for West Virginia residents and WVU students to complete of total of two million hours of community service before 2018.
