West Virginia University President Gordon Gee has been named the 2015 Distinguished Citizen by the Mountaineer Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.

Gee accepted the award during a banquet at the Waterfront Place Hotel in Morgantown, WV, on Monday (March 9). The award honors Gee for his “tireless service, limitless loyalty and determined commitment to helping young people improve their lives through higher education throughout our community and the State of West Virginia,” the Council said in announcing the selection.

Gee is an Eagle Scout and in 1990 received the national Distinguished Eagle Scout Award, which acknowledges Eagle Scouts who have distinguished themselves on a national level, receiving recognition or eminence within their field and who have a strong record of voluntary service to their community. Only Eagle Scouts who earned the Eagle Scout rank a minimum of 25 years previously are eligible for nomination.

Since 1928, the Mountaineer Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, has served thousands of youth in North Central West Virginia. It is committed to building character, citizenship, and personal fitness among youth by focusing on dynamic programs of outdoor activities and leadership training.
