Bryan Shaver, an alumnus currently serving as vice president and director of internal audit of Federated Mutual Insurance, has been named the new director of internal audit at West Virginia University effective Jan. 5, President Gordon Gee announced today (Dec. 30).

The internal auditor reports to the president of the University and works closely with the Board of Governors. His responsibilities will include bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and optimize the effectiveness of risk management, internal controls and regulatory compliance processes to the University on an on-going basis.

“I am extremely excited to be coming back to home to West Virginia and joining WVU,” Shaver said. “I very much look forward to the opportunity to partner with the Board of Governors, President Gee and University leadership to help ensure the continued success of WVU.”

Much of Shaver’s career has been spent in internal auditing at Federated and Hanover Direct Inc. Before that he was a project engineer and project manager at the Naval Surface Warfare Center’s Research and Development Center. He has also served as vice chairman, secretary and on the board of directors of the TMB Federal Credit Union in Bethesda, Maryland.

While at Federated in Owatonna, Minnesota, he was responsible for building the internal audit department from the ground up for the $6 billion multi-line mutual insurance company. He developed the department’s first quality assurance and improvement program and led it through its first independent Institute of Internal Auditors Quality Assessment Review. He recruited and developed talent from local universities and was the driving force behind the company’s first scholarship program for regional accounting students.

Shaver, a Fairmont native, received a bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering from WVU and an MBA from Loyola University Maryland. He and his wife, Roberta, and five chilrdren will be relocating to Morgantown.

He is a certified public accountant, certified information system auditor and a chartered property and casualty underwriter.

Shaver succeeds Bill Quigley who retired as auditor after a 40-year career at WVU. Douglas L. Maatman has been serving in an interim capacity for several months and will return to retirement.
