West Virginia University has been named 43rd in the Military Times Best for Vets: Colleges 2015 rankings.

In their fifth year, the rankings factor is the most comprehensive school-by-school assessment of veteran and military students’ success rates. Best for Vets: Colleges 2015 is an editorially independent news project that evaluates the many factors that make an organization a good fit for service members, military veterans and their families.

The detailed survey requires schools to meticulously document a tremendous array of services, special rules, accommodations and financial incentives offered to military and veteran students and to describe many aspects of veteran culture on a campus.

Out of 600 schools that participated in the survey, only the top 100 in the country were chosen.

“As we look toward Veterans Day as a time to remember, celebrate and thank those who have served and the troops who are currently serving both home and abroad, today, this news could not have come at a better time,” said Jerry McCarthy, director of WVU Veterans Affairs. “It is great for WVU to be recognized as one of the nations’ top schools for their commitment in providing the best opportunities to student veterans, service members and dependents of veterans.”

“I truly believe this distinction is due to the dedication of faculty, staff and countless others at WVU that help our nation’s veterans continue their education,” said McCarthy.

“We factor in what is, to our knowledge, the most detailed school-by-school data on veteran students’ academic success anywhere, including graduation, retention, persistence and course completion rates,” says Amanda Miller, editor of Bets for Vets. Two years ago, only 11 percent of the hundreds of schools surveyed could provide that level of detail. This year, that figure is up to 45 percent. “By recognizing only the schools that do the most, we believe we’re helping to raise the bar in veteran student services.”
