Three West Virginia University students who are military veterans will participate in a Veterans Speak Out event at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 10, at the Suncrest office of Clear Mountain Bank, 1085 Van Voorhis Road, Suite 150.

The Veterans Day Recognition Ceremony, held in conjunction with SPA 270, Effective Public Speaking, will feature the following speakers, listed with their branch of military and title of their speech:

  • Dorian O’Neal, Navy, The 1890 Plan
  • Shawn Cosner, Army, 1,300,000
  • Gregory Shafer, Marines, It’s About the Warrior

O’Neal is a native of Baltimore County, Maryland and is a freshman studying physics.

Cosner, of Preston County, is a senior who will receive his Regents Bachelor of Arts degree in December.

A Braxton County native, Shafer, of the Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design, was a sergeant who received the Purple Heart.

Cosner and O’Neal will also speak at the Veterans Breakfast from 8-10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11 in the Mountainlair.

These presentations are modeled after a class taught by Carolyn Atkins, WVU professor of speech pathology and audiology in the College of Education and Human Services, who has encouraged veterans to share their stories with the public.
