West Virginia University can now use an app in place of their Mountaineer Card to access some services across campus.

Mountaineer Card Services has been working on integrating campus card functions into mobile devices, so students can access services by launching an app called “Mobile ID.” The app will enable students to authorize their smart phone or device to function as their Mountaineer Card at certain campus locations. For now, residence hall students can use it for laundry purposes.

“This app will eventually become an alternative to using the Mountaineer Card at many campus locations, which can be especially helpful outside of university business hours if someone loses their Mountaineer Card,” said Brandon Twigg, assistant director for Mountaineer Card Services. “In time, we will be looking to add more functions for the app, including the PRT and electronic locks across campus.”

To get started, users need to first visit the App Store or Google Play, depending on your device, to download the free “CBORD Mobile ID” app to their smart device. Users can visit http://wvucard.wvu.edu/mobileid/ for further instructions on downloading the “Mobile ID” app and registering their smart device as a credential. Users will have the ability to revoke the credentials from their smart device at any time.

“Mobile ID” will also enhance security. Users will have the ability to create an optional PIN for the app; The PIN feature adds another layer of security for the cardholder. Also, each location uses geo-fencing, so transactions can only be performed at a location when the user is in close proximity to that location.

Within MyMountaineerCard, users can also “Report Lost Phone.” This feature comes in handy if a user loses his or her smart device. By reporting the device as lost, the Mobile ID app will no longer function, and the user would need to re-authorize each device again to use the app in the future.
