The David C. Hardesty Jr. Festival of Ideas returns on Nov. 11 with Dr. Stuart Yudofsky giving the 2014 Tanner Lecture. His talk begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Mountainlair Ballrooms. This event is part of West Virginia University’s Veterans Day celebrations.

Dr. Yudofsky is the distinguished service professor and chairman and holds the Beth K. and Stuart C. Yudofsky Presidential Chair in Neuropsychiatry in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Baylor College of Medicine. He is also chairman of the psychiatry department at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas, and is responsible for oversight of academic activities in psychiatry at the Menninger Clinic, the Ben Taub General Hospital, the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, The Texas Children’s Hospital and, most recently, the MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Yudofsky’s research and clinical practice focus in two areas: psycho-pharmacology (the use of medications to treat mental illnesses) and neuropsychiatry (the treatment of mood and behavioral changes associated with brain disorders such as stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis and traumatic brain injury).

He is the author and co-author of numerous scientific articles, more than 70 book chapters and more than 48 medical books, including two of the standard reference textbooks in the field. He wrote “What You Need to Know About Psychiatric Drugs,” a book for the general public about psychiatric medications and “Fatal Flaws,” a hybrid book about personality disorders for mental health professionals and for people in destructive relationships with people with those conditions. His most recent book, “Fatal Pauses,” is about people who become stuck in unhealthy behavioral patterns and relationships.

The Festival of Ideas was created in 1995 by WVU President Emeritus David C. Hardesty Jr. and was inspired by events he organized as student body president in the 1960s. Today, the lecture series spans the academic year and serves to engage a diverse group of newsmakers, public figures, thought leaders and University superstars with the campus community. It’s organized by the Office of University Events.
