Matt Elder and Rachel Poe have been announced as West Virginia University’s 2014 Homecoming king and queen.

Elder and Poe were crowned during halftime of the WVU-Kansas football game on Saturday (Oct. 4) at Milan Puskar Stadium.

Elder, a marketing major from Boca Raton, Fla., is the assistant director for the Mountaineer Maniacs. He is also the recruitment chairman for the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Matt serves on the Mountaineer Week committee and also works as a sports marketing intern for WVU Athletics. He is involved in many community service activities such as Maniacs blood drives, Ryan’s Rally and his fraternity’s philanthropy which raises money for the Wounded Warriors Project. He is the son of Ken and Tricia Elder and will be escorted by his mother and grandmother. He is sponsored by the Mountaineer Maniacs.

Poe, an accounting major from Morgantown, is the current president of the Panhellenic Council. During the 2012–2013 school year, she served as vice president of risk management for Alpha Phi sorority. She is a member of Mortar Board, Beta Gamma Sigma and the WVU Honors College. Her community service hours include the Alpha Phi Red Dress Gala, Sundale Nursing Home, Greek Clean-up and Christian Help. She is the daughter of Rocky and Cathe Poe. Rachel is sponsored by the WVU Panhellenic Council.

Other king candidates were: Samuel Richardson from Pittsford, New York; Tommy Skinner from West Grove, Pennsylvania; Glen Smithberger from Scott Depot; and Nick Woloszyn from Fredonia, New York.

Other queen candidates were: Bria Cross from Wheeling; Kaylee Kuzma from Waterford,Pennsylvania; Makayla Lewis from Bunker Hill; and Alyssa “Squeaks” Testa from Fredricksburg, Virginia.

Former WVU football coach and College Football Hall of Famer Bobby Bowden and his wife Ann, the Homecoming parade marshals were honored at halftime.

WVU alumni David Baum, Dr. Bruce Berry, Sid and Bonnie Griswell, Ashley Hardesty Odell and Frank Vitale were honored as the 2014 WVU Alumni Association’s Chapter and Service Awards at halftime. For more on these six, visit here.
