West Virginia University today (Aug. 14) issued the following statement from Dean of Students Corey Farris:

“The entire University community is saddened by the tragic death today of one of our own, Devante Waites, a 19-year-old freshman from Fairmont. We send our thoughts and prayers to Devante’s family and many friends, and our Division of Student Life has already been in touch with his family to offer support and comfort in any way we can. Our hearts are simply breaking today as we prepare to welcome students back to campus, and in that context it’s good to remember that we hold each Mountaineer dear, and we are all part of a community that cares for each other. At an appropriate time, there will be a bell-ringing to honor Devante. Also, counseling is available through WellWVU and I encourage any student to contact the office (304.293.4431) or visit its new location on the Evansdale campus.”
