Sports is big business these days, so it only makes sense that the research that studies sports and economics has becoming increasingly important.

That focus is a good thing for West Virginia University, where the College of Business and Economics has been ranked No. 6 in the world as of January 2014 in the IDEAS/RePEc. The ranking was part of the “Top 10% Institutions and Economists in the Field of Sports & Economics” conducted by IDEAS, a service hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis that ranks economists, economics departments and economics journals based on research output.

Dr. Brad Humphreys, an associate professor of Economics at B&E, has sports and economics in his specialty areas. He said the ranking is based, in part, on citations, which is “the regard your peers have for your research.”

“These rankings are all based on research productivity,” said Humphreys. “They rank departments and economists in many different fields, one of which is Sports and Economics. These particular rankings are based on information on the research output of approximately 39,000 registered economists worldwide. B&E has a tradition of publishing research in sports and economics, and the ranking reflects that tradition.”
