J. Brett Harvey, the chairman and CEO of the leading coal and natural gas producer in the entire Appalachian Basin, is one of the most recognized and highly respected executives in the energy arena today.

Harvey, who was inducted into the West Virginia Business Hall of Fame last year, will be featured at West Virginia University on Nov. 6 as part of the College of Business and Economics B&E Distinguished Speaker Series at the Erickson Alumni Center at 6 p.m.

“It’s a great opportunity for B&E to present Mr. Harvey in this series because of his standing in the national and international energy arenas,” said Dr. Nancy McIntyre, Senior Associate Dean, WVU College of Business and Economics. “He has been highly successful throughout his career, and it was a privilege to honor him last year in the West Virginia Business Hall of Fame. And his dedication to safety while dramatically increasing revenues demonstrates that Mr. Harvey has achieved an excellent balance in the management of CONSOL.”

Upon joining CONSOL in 1998, Harvey provided strategic direction by establishing safety as a company value, and in doing so has become an energy industry leader in safety. As a fourth generation coal miner, Harvey has often stated that “safety trumps production and profit.” As a result, CONSOL spends $200 million per year on safety efforts and compliance to make the company more productive. While buckling down on safety, Harvey has simultaneously been able to increase the value of CONSOL in areas such as annual revenues and total shareholder returns.

A native of Utah, Harvey received a bachelor’s degree in mining engineering from the University of Utah. He began his business career in 1979 with Kaiser Steel Company at the Sunnyside Mine in Utah, and in 1984 he was elected vice president and general manager for Kaiser Coal of New Mexico. In 1986 he joined Utah Power & Light Company. Harvey was elected vice president-mining for PacifiCorp in 1990. He was named president and chief executive officer of Interwest in 1993, vice president of PacifiCorp Fuels in 1993, and president and chief executive officer of PacifiCorp Energy in 1995. He became president and chief executive officer of CONSOL Energy Inc. on January 1, 1998.

In April 2000 Harvey was the recipient of the John E. Wilson Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Utah’s Mining Engineering Department. In 2003, he was presented with The Percy Nicholls Award, which is jointly conferred by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration, Inc. and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for notable scientific or industrial achievement in the field of solid fuels. He received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Utah Alumni Association in February 2008 and that same year was awarded an honorary doctorate from Duquesne University. In 2009, he was inducted into the West Virginia Coal Hall of Fame.

Harvey also is a member of the board of directors of Barrick Gold Corporation (Toronto) and Allegheny Technologies Incorporated (Pittsburgh).

Under Harvey’s direction, CONSOL Energy was named one of America’s most admired companies in 2005 by Fortune magazine, and was named to Forbes’ 2010 “100 Most Trustworthy Companies” list. He also oversaw the construction of the new CONSOL Energy Center, home to the Pittsburgh Penguins and the first NHL arena to achieve LEED Gold Certification, a high standard of sustainability. CONSOL Energy remains one of West Virginia’s leading energy producers, employers and corporate citizens.
