An expert in the trends and strategies of physical activity, Dr. Harold W. (Bill) Kohl, III, will visit the West Virginia University campus to discuss the global view of health burdens associated with physical inactivity and strategies to address the problem.

Kohl will speak to WVU faculty and students on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 4 p.m. in Auditorium 1905 of Health Science Center North (Pylon Area). The presentation, titled “Physical Activity and Public Health: More of the Same is Not Enough,” is free and open to the public.

“The College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences’ Department of Coaching and Teaching Studies is honored to host Dr. Kohl as our distinguished lecturer this fall. His expertise in physical activity and public health will appeal to many faculty across the University who are involved in related research,” explained Eloise Elliott, Ware Distinguished professor, College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences.

As professor of Epidemiology and Kinesiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center – Houston School of Public Health and University of Texas at Austin, Kohl works in the area of physical activity, health and intervention programs for adults and children and developing and advising policy issues.

He is the founder and president of the International Society for Physical Activity and Health and is currently Editor Emeritus of the Journal of Physical Activity and Health. He has published more than 170 papers, chapters and monographs and in 2012 co-authored the textbook Foundations of Physical Activity and Public Health.

“Dr. Kohl and his co-author Dr. Tinker D. Murray have written one of the premier textbooks in physical activity and public health. Their text ‘Foundations of Physical Activity and Public Health’ is a must read for public health scientists and practitioners,” said Peter Giacobbi, associate professor, department of sport sciences, CPASS and joint appointment in the department of epidemiology, School of Public Health.

Kohl currently serves as Chair of an Institute of Medicine committee at the National Academies of Science on physical activity and physical education in school-based settings. He most recently chaired the IOM report entitled “Educating the Student Body: Taking Physical Activity and Physical Education to School.” He also serves on the Science Board of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness, Sports and Nutrition.
