Guest artists from the contemporary chamber music group Ensemble: Priphrie will present free clinics and a recital at the West Virginia University School of Music, Wednesday, Oct. 23, as part of their fall tour.

The percussionist in the ensemble is alumna Ginny Armstrong, who received her bachelor’s degree in music from WVU in 1989 and a master’s degree in 1992.

The Iowa-based ensemble also features soprano Michelle Crouch, pianist Ann DuHamel, composer Luke Dahn, cellist Charles Akert, flutist Martha Councell-Vargas, conductor and composer Joseph Dangerfield, violist Stephen Fine, clarinetist Yasmin Flores and violinist Tricia Park.

The ensemble’s mission is to promote contemporary music by presenting stimulating and inspiring concerts of new chamber works, by commissioning new works from both emerging and established composers, and by inviting audiences to join them in recognizing great art of our time.

During their recital, to be held Oct. 23 at 6 p.m., in the Creative Arts Center’s Gladys G. Davis Theatre, the ensemble will perform the same program they will play at their debut at Carnegie Hall in New York City on Oct. 26.

The program includes: “Calder Cadences” (2013) by Luke Dahn; “The Wild” (2103) by Joseph Dangerfield; “I Hear the Sound that has Fallen Silent” (2005) by Irina Dubkova; “Butterfly Dance” (2001) by David Gompper; “Four Songs on Poems of Seamus Heaney” (2012) by Louis Karchin; and “Dharana” (1975) by Giacinto Scelsi.

Both the recital and the clinics, to be held earlier in the day, are free and open to the public.
