The West Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Administration DUI simulator will be on West Virginia University’s campus on Thursday (Sept. 5) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the front of the Mountainlair.

The DUI simulator travels throughout the state to educate young adults about the harmful effects of drinking and distractive driving. The program will allow students to experience various driving conditions and while safely operating a computer-generated simulation system. The program mimics the difficulties drivers will encounter at various blood alcohol content levels.

The Division of Student Affairs and WELLWVU partnered with State Farm, the West Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Administration and the West Virginia Governor’s Highway Safety Program to bring the DUI simulator to campus. All WVU students, faculty, staff and community members are encouraged to stop by.

By engaging students and the public, the WVABCA is able to provide valuable tools to combat underage drinking, drinking and driving and distracted driving. The DUI simulator program places an emphasis on making good decisions behind the wheel of a car.

The DUI simulator program is made possible by funding from State Farm and an ongoing grant from the West Virginia Governor’s Highway Safety Program.

According the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2009, of the 33,808 fatalities on U.S. roads, 10,839 had a BAC of .08 or higher. For the same year in West Virginia, there were 356 traffic-related fatalities, with 115 people having a BAC of .08 or higher.
