The School of Music at West Virginia University is hosting its International Flute Symposium at the Creative Arts Center July 16-21, featuring gala concerts each day that are free and open to the public.

The event will feature master classes, workshops and concerts featuring internationally acclaimed flutists, as well as presenters that include specialists in body mapping, breathing and tone, flute repair, rhythm, dance, Baroque music and more.

This year’s symposium also includes an Honors Youth Division, as well as an Emerging Artist Competition, a High School Artist Competition, and an Orchestral Audition Competition.

The International Flute Symposium is hosted by WVU flute professor and internationally acclaimed flutist Nina Assimakopoulos.

Guest artists for 2013 include: Alberto Almarza of Carnegie Mellon University; Matej Grahek of the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra; Kelly Wilson, body mapping specialist; WVU doctoral flute student Pamela Murchison, who currently piccolo with the West Virginia, Akron and Ohio Valley Symphony Orchestras; Jamie Baum, jazz flutist from the Manhattan School of Music; Amara Guitry, Baroque flutist; Wendy Kumer of the Pittsburgh Flute Academy; WVU voice professor Hope Koehler, soprano; Keith Torgan and Barbara Siesel, The Green Golly Project; The Fourth Wall (Hybrid-Arts Ensemble); Robert Johnson, Flute Specialists, Inc., flute repair classes; Jennifer Conner, Second Flute, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra; and Rhian Kenny, Principal Piccolo, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Tuesday, July 16: The Opening Gala Concert, to be held at 8 p.m. in Bloch Hall (Room 200A), will feature Assimakopoulos with guest artists Alberto Almarza, Amara Guitry, WVU voice professor Hope Koehler and WVU doctoral student pianist Hye-Jeong Seong.

Wednesday, July 17: Evening Gala Concert at 8 p.m. in Bloch Hall, with Pam Murchison, Amara Guitry, Nina Assimakopoulos and Alberto Almarza.

Thursday, July 18: Evening Gala Concert at 8 p.m. in Bloch Hall, with jazz flutist Jamie Baum, WVU pianist James Miltenberger and the Hybrid-Arts Ensemble, The Fourth Wall.

Friday, July 19: Evening Gala Concert at 8 p.m. in Bloch Hall with The Fourth Wall, Matej Grahek and others.

Saturday, July 20: Evening Gala Concert at 8 p.m. in Bloch Hall with Keith Torgan and Barbara Siesel of the Green Golly Project and The Fourth Wall.

Sunday, July 21: The Closing Gala Concert will be held at noon in Bloch Hall, featuring the IFS Flute Choir, the Young Artist Competition and High School Competition winners, the Junior High-High School Honors Project piece with The Fourth Wall and Nina Assimakopoulos.
