WASHINGTON, D.C. —Students of West Virginia University will be reaping the benefits of generous gifts provided by the National Capital Area Chapter of the WVU Alumni Association.

The NCAC announced gifts to the University totaling more than $25,000 during the Association’s annual Alumni Luncheon on Capitol Hill on Wednesday (June 26).

“Members of our chapter believe it is important to support our alma mater by giving back to the university that has given them so much. We want these contributions to honor our university and provide new opportunities to help our students succeed,” said Holly Metz, WVU Alumni Association Board of Directors and member of the NCAC.

The Chapter presented $5,000 to Steve Douglas, president and CEO, WVU Alumni Association, to support its internship program. Each year the Association provides internships to nearly 15 students studying public relations, English, marketing and other fields. Members of the Chapter also surprised Douglas with a $1,000 gift to the Loyalty Permanent Endowment Fund in honor of his 30 years of service to the WVU Alumni Association.

“What a wonderful gesture; I’m speechless,” Douglas said. “The Loyalty Permanent Endowment Fund is the oldest scholarship fund on campus, and I am extremely proud of the number of students we have been able to assist financially. I’m truly moved by the Chapter’s generosity.”

Wayne King, president and CEO of the WVU Foundation, also accepted a check in the amount of $10,000 for the John F. Nicholas Memorial Scholarship Fund, which is managed by the Foundation, bringing the total funds to more than $160,000. This scholarship will provide D.C. area students attending WVU with $6,800 in scholarships for the 2013-14 academic school year.

The Chapter also announced that during its annual Crab Feast on Aug. 17, it will be making a $3,000 donation to the Mountaineer Athletic Club to fund scholarships for WVU athletes.
