Scholars from across North America and from the United Kingdom will head to West Virginia University Friday and Saturday (April 19 and 20) in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Victorian Poetry journal.
WVU’s oldest journal with an international readership, Victorian Poetry publishes articles exploring historical, social and cultural themes found in British poetry written during the Victorian Period (1830-1914).
“Throughout its history, Victorian Poetry has published articles by many of the leading scholars in Victorian studies from North America, the United Kingdom and elsewhere,” said John Lamb, the journal’s editor.
“The two-day conference will bring together some 50 Victorianists, many of whom have previously contributed to the journal.”
The scholars will present research on the works of Robert Browning, Alfred Lord Tennyson and other major figures from the Victorian Period.
A roundtable discussion on Friday and Saturday’s keynote address are open to the public.
“For 50 years, Victorian Poetry has been a leading scholarly journal in the field of 19th century British literature, and the premier forum for poetry written during the reign of Victoria,” said Saturday’s keynote speaker Linda Hughes, Addie Levy Professor of Literature at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.
“In my keynote address, I will explore the directions given to the journal by its founding editors, Gordon Pitts and John Stasny, how scholarly trends have shifted in half a century in response to shifting historical conditions and why the collective story of Victorian poetry told by the journal and its contributors continues to matter today.”
Published by WVU Press and sponsored by the Department of English, Victorian Poetry was founded in 1962 to further the study of the poetry of the Victorian Period in Britain. The journal publishes four issues a year.
