Members of the West Virginia University Greek community will come together to kick off their annual Greek Week festivities starting Monday (March 11).
Greek Week is the annual celebration of Greek culture on campus and the push from that community toward its goals of philanthropy.
“WVU fraternity and sorority members have a strong commitment to philanthropy and community service,” said director of WVU’s Student Organizations Services Ron Justice. “Last year, the Greek community raised thousands of dollars for various charities and performed more than 10,000 community service hours.”
On Monday (March 11), banners from fraternities and sororities across campus will be hoisted by noon in the Mountainlair. At 6 p.m. fraternity members will compete in an all-male beauty pageant at Eiesland Hall. Proceeds will benefit the 2013 WVU Relay for Life fundraising campaign.
Next week’s activities will also include the annual games competition beginning at 4 p.m. on Wednesday (March 13). The games will take place on the Mountainlair Green. Each team will compete to raise money for certain charities.
On Thursday (March 14), the Greeks will come together for some friendly fun while competing in Airbands, in which each team will showcase their skills and perform based on their chosen theme. Airbands will take place on the Mountainlair Green at 4 p.m. During the Airbands intermission, there will be a costume contest. Costumes will be judged on creativity and relation to the theme chosen by the participants.
“Greek Week allows our sorority and fraternity members to promote this philanthropic spirit while showcasing their talents and enjoying some friendly competition,” Justice said. “The collaborative effort of the fraternities and sororities can have a positive impact on the community in many ways during Greek Week.”
WVU’s Greek system is home to three Greek leadership councils and 28 chapters that include more than 1,500 students. In existence for more than 100 years, WVU Greeks are founded on the ideals of scholarship, service, leadership, and friendship.
WVU’s Relay for Life will take place on April 19 at the Mountaineer Track near the Coliseum. The relay will run from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. This year’s theme “Happy Birthday Relay” will celebrate the 100th Birthday of the American Cancer Society.
