The West Virginia University School of Music is pleased to announce the inaugural performance at the Creative Arts Center of an outstanding new music ensemble, the WVU Chamber Players, Tuesday, March 12.

The concert begins at 8:15 p.m. in the Bloch Learning and Performance Hall (200A) and is free and open to the public.

The WVU Chamber Players is comprised of outstanding members of the WVU School of Music’s performing faculty, conducted by Mitchell Arnold. They will collaborate on a program that includes the “Appalachian Spring Suite” by Aaron Copland, “Octandre” by Edgard Varse and the world premier of “Quintet for Oboe and Piano Quartet” by WVU School of Music Composer-in-Residence John Beall, who is also a Benedum Distinguished Scholar in the Humanities and Performing Arts.

“To work together as a performing ensemble has long been a dream of ours at the WVU School of Music,” said Dr. Arnold, director of orchestral activities. “The talent and performing energy of my colleagues is fantastic. We cannot wait to bring this exciting program to regional audiences.”

The WVU Chamber Players has as its core two long-standing faculty ensembles: the WVU Laureate Wind Quintet and the WVU Piano Quartet. These groups have been joined by other faculty to perform great works calling for larger forces.

The group will present the “Appalachian Spring Suite” in its original version for 13 instruments: a combination of strings, winds and piano. John Beall’s “Quintet” features faculty oboist Cynthia Babin Anderson joining the WVU Piano Quartet. The remaining work, for eight musicians, is Edgard Varse’s blister-hot “Octandre.”
