The West Virginia University School of Music’s choral area, under the leadership of new director Jeffery Redding, will present its 2013 Unity Concert titled, “Unity—For the Sake of Our Children” on Sunday (Feb. 24).

The concert will begin at 3:15 p.m. in the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre of the Creative Arts Center.

According to Dr. Redding, the entire concert is centered around the fact that it takes a village to raise our children and to live in a world where we accept each other’s differences and grow together in unity.

The program features songs such as “It Takes a Village,” “I Dream a World,” “For the Sake of Our Children,” “Turn the World Around,” “Walk in Jerusalem” and “Unity.”

Music students Yana Tyulkova and John Posey, along with the University Choir and the WV Community Choir, will perform the music.

Players from the WVU Percussion Ensemble who will join them include John White, David Haley, David Sharp, Maro Woika and Justin Rife.

This will be Redding’s first concert since joining the WVU faculty in January. Previously, he served as the director of Choral Activities at West Orange High School in Winter Garden, Fla., where he was named Teacher of the Year in 2003.

Redding holds a doctorate in Choral Conducting/Music Education, a master’s degree in Music Education from the Florida State University and a bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Florida A&M University.
