Sam F. Stack Jr., a professor in West Virginia University’s College of Education and Human Services, has been awarded the 2012 American Educational Studies Association Critics Choice Book Award for Teachers, Leaders, and Schools: Essays by John Dewey. The ceremony took place in late 2012 in Seattle.

Stack co-authored the book with Douglas J. Simpson, a professor at the Texas Tech University College of Education. Their work is a selection of essays written by noted 20th century philosopher John Dewey, whose influence is still seen in education today.

Dewey was known for undertaking educational issues and how they prepare, or fail to prepare, students to participate in a democratic society. By reviving his essays, Stack and Simpson seek to renew dialogue on the purpose of American education.

“We were extremely pleased and honored to receive the 2012 Critics Choice Award from the American Educational Studies Association,” said Stack. “It is one of the highest book awards given in our profession of social and cultural foundations.”

Teachers, Leaders, and Schools: Essays by John Dewey is available for purchase on Amazon.com.

Established in 1968, the American Educational Studies Association is an international society mostly composed of college and university professors focused on teaching and researching the foundations of education. The Critics’ Choice Book Award recognizes recent publications that are exceptional in their respective fields of study. AESA members gather each year to praise these works.
