Cellist Stephen Czarkowski and pianist Scott Beard, who are faculty members at Shepherd University, will perform a guest artist recital at the West Virginia University College of Creative Arts, Tuesday, Feb. 5.
The event begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Bloch Learning and Performance Hall of the Creative Arts Center and is free and open to the public.
The program will include “Mi Buenos Aires querido” (Tango) by Carlos Gardel (1890-1935); Sonata, Op. 5, No. 2 for cello and piano by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827); and, following a brief intermission, Sonata, Op. 65 for cello and piano by Fr�d�ric Chopin (1810-1849).
Stephen Czarkowski is in demand as a conductor, cellist and educator in the Washington, D.C., area and nationally. He serves as music director and conductor of the Apollo Chamber Orchestra and has collaborated with artists from the Metropolitan Opera and the Washington National Opera. In addition, he is assistant conductor of the Opera Camerata of Washington, D.C., as well as its orchestra personnel manager and principal cellist. With Opera Camerata, Czarkowski has most recently conducted performances of “The Merry Widow” and “Rigoletto” to great success at the Embassy of Austria and Romanian Ambassador’s residency.
Dr. Scott Beard is a nationally recognized pianist, teacher, clinician, author and recording artist. Recognized for his outstanding teaching abilities, he was named 2006 West Virginia Music Teacher of the Year and runner-up for West Virginia Professor of the Year (2009). Concerts as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral soloist have taken him throughout the United States and Canada, Croatia, Ecuador, France, Italy and Spain. Recent recital appearances include Weill Recital Hall, the Tenri Cultural Institute of New York, the Polish, Danish, Belgian and Russian embassies, and numerous universities throughout the East Coast.
