Three decades later, Kansas artist reflects on creating the WVU logo

Watch John Martin describe his inspiration for the Flying WV logo, which he designed in 1980.

The name John Martin may not ring a bell.

But his work will.

If you’re a tried-and-true Mountaineer, you live and breathe one of his proudest works everyday – the Flying WV logo, the official symbol of West Virginia University.

From his native Kansas, Martin traveled to Morgantown for the Dec. 1 football game between the Mountaineers and the Kansas Jayhawks. He sat down and talked to us for this video, and he couldn’t believe his eyes as he ventured through the streets of Morgantown.

What he scribbled on scratch paper back in 1980 was everywhere.

And although Martin did not go to school here, he will forever be a Mountaineer for designing the crisp, clean logo that unites all of us who bleed the gold and blue.
