Organist Cristiano Rizzotto of Brazil, who is currently a graduate student in sacred music/organ at East Carolina University, will present a guest pipe organ recital at the West Virginia University Creative Arts Center on Saturday, Oct. 27.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre and is free and open to the public.

The program will include works by Jean Langlais, Johann Sebastian Bach, Flor Peeters, Cristiano Rizzotto, Hugo Distler, Buxtehude, Claude Balbastre and Eugne Gigout.

Rizzotto holds a bachelor’s degree in piano performance from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, where he graduated magna cum laude in 2010.

During 2009, he was an exchange student in the United States. When he returned to Rio de Janeiro to graduate, he was nominated the organist of the city’s Benedictine Abbey, owner of the oldest organ in South America and where the tradition of the chants and liturgy has been kept alive by the Carioca monks since the 16th century.

He returned to the United States last year for a master’s degree in sacred music/organ at East Carolina University, and has since begun playing for the First United Methodist Church in Washington, N.C.

One of his goals is to contribute to the resurrection and development of the organ culture in Brazil. While in the United States, he hopes to develop his skills as a church musician and contribute to the American liturgical scenery.
