West Virginia University Police Chief Bob Roberts is reminding Mountaineer fans in or coming to Morgantown for Saturday’s football game against fourth-ranked Kansas State to behave responsibly.

“This weekend WVU, Morgantown, West Virginia and all of our Mountaineer fans are hosts to nationally televised game with Kansas State and it is a key matchup for our team,” he said. “Excitement and emotions will be high and your law enforcement and other first responders are asking that everyone support the team, WVU, community and West Virginia in a safe and responsible way.

“It should be all our goals to be loud and proud while being respectful and responsible,” Roberts said.

Roberts offered the following advice to enjoying the day:

  • If you drink – do so responsibly. Additional officers will be at the game and the last thing a true Mountaineer fan wants is to miss this game due to an arrest, ejection or be refused admittance to the game for being intoxicated.
  • Smuggling alcohol into the stadium will result in ejection and possible arrest. Again, the wrong choice could result in missing the big game or worse.
  • Avoid pockets of rowdy individuals and do not engage them. Report such behavior to the first officer or event staff that you meet or call the UPD at 304-293-2677 (304.293.COPS).
  • Stay with friends and dress for visibility since this is a night game.
  • Regarding any post game celebrations after a team victory:
    • Fans are not permitted on the field and those in violation are subject to arrest. The field is for our players and fans should respect them by staying in the stands while joining them in singing “Country Roads”. Be responsible or expect to be held accountable.
    • Law enforcement will be on patrol after the game to assist in keeping our community and our citizens safe. Officers will take the necessary enforcement actions to insure this happens.

“We ask for your support and cooperation in making this weekend a great Mountaineer victory and experience for everyone,” Roberts said. “We hope you join us in making our Mountaineers, community, WVU and the State proud of our actions on and off the field.”
